Mattresses

The County and City of Peterborough along with the Townships, are always investigating and taking advantage of new recycling programs to divert Waste from the Bensfort Road, Waste Management Facility, in an effort to prolong its life.  As such, Mattresses and Box Springs are now 'Recyclable' products and are only accepted at the Bensfort Road Landfill Site. Residents are requested to bring the mattresses as dry and clean as possible to assist with the recycling program. A "tipping" fee will apply.

Under the recycling program, the Township is no longer able to accept these items at either Transfer Station. However, as a convenience to our North Kawartha residents, Mattresses and Box Springs are accepted at the Anstruther Transfer Station on Special Clean-Up DaysTipping fees apply.

Household Furniture

Household furniture such as couches, padded chairs, etc., are only accepted at the Bensfort Road, Waste Management Facility. However, as was noted above regarding mattresses, as a convenience to our North Kawartha residents, we accept these items at the Anstruther Transfer Station on Special Clean-Up Days. Additionally, please note that items such as coffee tables, and other furniture if made entirely of wood qualify as residential Construction and Demolition materials, and can be accepted at the Anstruther Transfer Station from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving Day. Tipping fees apply. In addition, some items may qualify for acceptance at our Re-Use Depot

Please see our Construction and DemolitionRe-Use Depot, and Special Clean-Up Days pages for additional information.

The Township of North Kawartha implemented a curbside garbage and recycling collection program in 2004. The Recycling Program for all eight Townships in Peterborough County, whether curbside or at the transfer stations, is administered by the County of Peterborough, in co-operation with the Township. The Township administers garbage collection, either at the curbside or in the transfer stations.

New Recycling Collection Contract Q & A

The County of Peterborough entered into a new collection contract on November 1, 2019, with the company Emterra. Click on this link to find complete answers to questions about the change in the Company providing this service (recycling collection), as well as the impact this change will have for North Kawartha residents, and the residents of Peterborough County. If you're looking for a quick summary of FAQs regarding this change, click here.

As a result of this change, it's possible that the lock on your bear bin may be reclaimed by the previous recycling contractor. If this should happen to you, please email a request for a new lock to Gary Geraldi (Director of Parks and Recreation/Waste Management) by clicking here. In your email please be sure to include your name, address, phone number, location of the bin, and the addresses that the bin serves.
