Recreation Programs

COVID-19 Notice

The Township of North Kawartha is taking actions to help protect the health of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please visit our COVID-19 page to stay informed of closures/changes to Township services, amenities, and programs. The Township is taking a cautious, "staggered approach" to re-opening the North KawarthaWilson Park, and Glen Alda Community Centres, to ensure public safety, and in compliance with Provincial Government orders, and Peterborough Public Health recommendations

Programs and/or services at the Community Centres gradually resumed (with restrictions), beginning September 14th. The Fitness Centre opened September 28th, and the NKCC ice surface on October 2nd. Other programming continues to be gradually implemented.

Face coverings/masks must be worn, in accordance with the Peterborough Public Health directives when entering Municipal Buildings, and use hand-sanitizer provided at the entrances. Please review our screening poster upon entering, and do not attend any Municipal Buildings if you are sick or have any symptoms.

Under normal circumstances we offer a variety of recreation programs. In addition to annual seasonal programs such as baseball, gymnastics, soccer, swimming, an adult hockey league, and figure skating, we also sponsor other programs such as ping pong, adult pickleball, pick-up hockey, and plenty of public skating.

We work closely with the AMHA (Apsley Minor Hockey Association), and host a Junior C hockey team - the North Kawartha Knights. There is also the fully-equipped NKCC Fitness Centre, and various fitness classes are offered. In the Summer there are beach volleyball, basketball, and tennis/pickleball courts, as well as a baseball diamond at Wilson Park. And we are always open to looking at new program ideas. For more detailed information on our recreation programs, please choose from the drop-downs below, or contact us at 705-656-4445.

In addition to our recreation programs, there is always lots to see and do in North Kawartha. Beyond this page, you will find various fun, exciting, and informative events on the following pages: Area AttractionsCommunity CalendarCommunity Centre Events and Activities - RecurringCommunity GroupsSpecial Events and in the North Kawartha Directory. Pre-Registration for the 2020/21 Season
To help protect the health of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic, registration for the Figure Skating Club 2020/21 Season had to be adjusted to ensure the safety of all involved.

To that end, Pre-registration is a must. Please send an email to j.elder@northkawartha.ca, in order to enroll your child in the appropriate class, at the earliest time. Registration Forms and Participation Waivers will also be available at the NKCC and must be completed and signed prior to the first class. So please arrive early to go over the details in the new protocols. At the NKCC we accept cash, debit, or cheque. Cheques made payable to: The Township of North Kawartha.

There are some changes to be aware of:
  • Kindly note that we are enforcing a strict rule in allowing only one parent/guardian to help younger children with putting on their skates.
  • Due to overall occupancy restrictions, we must exclude individuals not participating in the Figure Skating program, with the exception of toddlers with their (one) parent.
  • With very young skaters one parent may assist with the child on ice, but the parent is required to wear skates and a mask, and a helmet is highly recommended.
  • Masks must be worn into the building, and as much as possible on the ice, unless strenuous activity warrants removal.
  • Please arrive 10 minutes early (and no sooner) to avoid waiting in the parking lot, so that we may allow each participant to enter the change room to remove boots and coats. The same rule (maximum 10 minutes) will apply when exiting the rear arena door.
  • The change rooms are limited to 8 participants, with more chairs outside in the hallway. All seats are clearly marked for physically distancing, and physical distancing must be strictly observed.
  • Please come dressed, ready to participate, with the exception of skates.
  • Please enter through the lobby doors and exit through the doors at the rear of the arena, immediately, when the class is over, so that we may use the electrostatic disinfectant sprayer between classes, and/or events.

The show is always highly entertaining, with a choreographed musical theme, charming costumes, wonderful back-drops and the infectious enthusiasm of the participants.
Unfortunately, this year's (2020) show had to be cancelled to help protect the health of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Club regrets having to make this decision.

Doors open, refreshments and meals available at 6:30 pm. The first of three comedians takes to the stage at 8 pm. A great time is had by all!

It is traditionally played on a badminton-sized court with special pickleball paddles, made of wood or high-tech aerospace materials. The ball used is similar to a wiffle ball, but slightly smaller. The wiffle ball and smaller court size allow the game to be accessible to people of all ages and abilities, while still allowing more competitive players to test their mettle.

Summer Swimming 2020

To help protect the health of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic, The North Kawartha Summer Swimming Program has been cancelled for 2020. The Township regrets having to make this decision.

For additional information about this and other programs, please take a look at our Spring and Summer 2019 Sports Programs flyer, or contact us at 705-656-4445.

Volunteers are a must for all programs, so please consider volunteering.

The Peterborough Public Health website has lots of valuable information pertaining to swimming and public beaches, including current test results.

Pickleball at Wilson Park
Pickleball was created with one thing in mind: fun. It was designed to be easy to learn and play, whether you’re five, eighty-five, or somewhere in-between.
