Recreation Programs

We offer a variety programs. On top of annual seasonal programs such as baseball, gymnastics, soccer, swimming, and figure skating, we also sponsor other programs such as ping pong, pick-up hockey, and plenty of public skating.

We also work closely with minor hockey, and host a Junior C hockey team - the North Kawartha Knights, and we are always open to looking at new program ideas.

Ball Hockey

Ball Hockey is played from mid-April to the end of June, every year at the NKCC.

Schedule

Youth Ball Hockey is played on Wednesday evenings from May 2 to June 27, 2018. You can register at the NKCC.

Tyke/Novice (ages 8 and under) play from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Atom/Peewee (ages 9 to 12) play from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Bantam/Midget (ages 13 to 18) play from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm. 

Volunteers are a must.


Fees

The cost to play is $25 for each player. At the NKCC we accept cash, debit and cheques. Cheques made payable to: The Township of North Kawartha.

North Kawartha Youth Baseball

Youth Baseball is played early July to the end of August, every year at the Lion's Park (335 McFadden Road, Apsley ON K0L 1A0).


Schedule

Youth baseball was played Tuesday or Thursday evenings July 3 to August 30, 2018.

North Kawartha Adult 3-Pitch League

The Adult 3-Pitch League season began on Monday, May 14 and ended on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 (playoffs inclusive).

Registration

You can register your team roster by April 27, 2018 at the NKCC. The cost to play is $150 for each team.

Rules

The North Kawartha Adult Baseball League follows the rules set out in the North Kawartha Adult 3-Pitch League Rules.

Schedule

Games are played at the Lion's Park and Wilson Park.  Each team plays one game a week, starting at 6:30 pm.

Gymnastics

NKCC Gymnastics has a mandate to build strength, agility, coordination and confidence in children ages 1 and up. We are a family friendly program focused on enhancing local children's athletic abilities, and instilling a life-long pattern of healthy habits.

Gymnastics runs year-round and is divided into several sessions, accommodating differing skill levels. Register early, to ensure your child gets a preferred spot.

Fall 2018 and Winter 2019 Gymnastics 

Fall Gymnastics takes place at the NKCC from September 24 to December 19, 2018. (Excluding Thanksgiving Monday and Hallowe'en)

Winter Gymnastics takes place at the NKCC from January 07 to April 12, 2019. (Excluding Family Day, March Break, and Easter)

Level placement is based on age and/or ability, therefore some age groups overlap.

Gymnastics Class Rules

  • Keep hair tied at the sides of the head in ponytails, braids or buns. The idea is to be able to roll comfortably.
  • No hair clips, bobby-pins or any other plastic or metal hair holders.
  • Wear form fitting clothing. Gymnastics leotard, yoga pants, cycling shorts are good but avoid baggy clothes.
  • No jewellery.
  • No cell phones, iPods or other distracting gadgets.
  • Stay within your training area. Please ask permission from your coach, program director or gym helper to use the bathrooms or leave the gym area.
  • Wear gymnastics slippers or bare feet.

Gymnastics Birthday Parties

Celebrate your child's birthday with a fun and exciting gymnastics party at the NKCC! For $65 an hour (minimum 3 hours) you get full use of the Banquet Hall and kitchen. We can accommodate up to 12 children, and we supply the coach, assistant coach (for parties with 6 or more children), and gymnastics equipment. To register for your Gymnastics Birthday Party, please speak to coach Robin.


Gymnastics Drop-in Days

From time to time we hold "Drop in Days" to encourage gymnastics students and those who are interested in gymnastics to come out for a day of exercise and fun with coach Robin. Participants can sign up for an hour or more, have fun and learn new gymnastics skills. Check here for upcoming dates. 


Adult Gymnastics

Enjoy advanced fitness with Adult Gymnastics. We begin with deep stretching, continue with balancing and skills on equipment. The most important factor in starting adult gymnastics is, it's fun! Learning how to tumble, flip, swing, and come as close as possible to self-powered flight, is a blast. It is possible to learn something new, every single class or workout that is attended. If you are an adult and think you are "too old" to start. Think again. Take on a challenge and join us!


Adult Gymnastics (ages 18 and up) takes place at the NKCC , Wednesdays 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

It is not necessary to have a Fitness Centre Membership to participate in the Adult Gymnastics program. However, a participant who holds an Annual Fitness Centre Membership receives a 10% discount off the class fee.

To ensure the running of the Adult Gymnastic classes, please register in advance. If the minimum number of participants are not registered (5), the class will not run.

 
Hockey

North Kawartha Knights

The Township of North Kawartha is pleased to be home to the North Kawartha Knights Junior C hockey franchise. The Knights' home games are played predominately on Saturday nights at the NKCC.

We offer an Adult Hockey League that plays Thursday evenings 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm, from September to March. If you are interested in playing or putting a team in the League, please contact us at 705-656-4445.

Apsley Minor Hockey Association (AMHA)

Pick-Up Hockey

Regular Pick-Up Hockey takes place at the NKCC starting in September and concluding in March. The cost is $5 per player, Wednesday evenings from 9:00 pm to 10:30 pm.

Oldtimers

We offer an Oldtimers League that plays Tuesday evenings from 9:30 pm to 10:30 pm. If you are interested, please contact 705-761-4371.

Summer Hockey School (Ivy Hockey Academy)

The Annual North Kawartha Summer Hockey School is held in the week before Labour Day. For more information about the school, and the 2018 schedule

  • Camp took place from August 27 to August 31, 2018
  • 2.5 hours a day $395/week
  • Age groups: 5 to 8, 9 to 11, 12 to 14, 15 to 17

Apsley (North Kawartha Community Centre)

Figure Skating Lessons

The North Kawartha Figure Skating Club

The North Kawartha Figure Skating Club prides itself on providing programs for the entire community. Come and learn to skate with us, where our skaters love the action, music and fun. Then in March they get to display the results of all their hard work and dedication in a spectacular ice show. 

Figure skating lessons at the NKCC begin September 11, 2018 and end with the North Kawartha Figure Skating Club Annual Show on Saturday, March 16, 2019. Registration begins in August. With many skill levels, we are able to assess your child's skating abilities and place them in the appropriate group.


Learn to Skate

Learn to Skate coaches work with young skaters to develop balance and the basics of skating. Skaters work on forward and backwards skating.

Intermediate

Intermediate coaches work with skaters who have graduated our Learn to Skate program. Skaters start working on basic spins and jumps.

Senior

Senior coaches work with skaters who have graduated our Intermediate program. Skaters continue working on higher level jumps and spins.

Ticket Ice

Figure Skaters are welcome to come to the NKCC on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7 am to 8:30 am for $3 per skater.  Ticket Ice is open to all figure skaters wanting to work on figure skating manoeuvres, routines, etc.


North Kawartha Figure Skating Club Annual Show

Each year in March, the North Kawartha Figure Skating Club presents its annual Skating Show. This is a chance for the skaters to showcase the new skills they have learned, and practiced all season. The show is always highly entertaining, with a choreographed musical theme, charming costumes, wonderful back-drops and the infectious enthusiasm of the participants. This year's  show takes place at 6 pm, on Saturday, March 16, 2019. 


North Kawartha Figure Skating Club Presents Yuk Yuk's 

On the second Saturday in August (10/19), the North Kawartha Figure Skating Club presents an evening of professional comedy, delivered by the Yuk Yuk's stable of touring comedians. This is an age of majority event and there will be food available. The show takes place at the NKCC and proceeds benefit the North Kawartha Figure Skating Club. Doors open, refreshments and meals available at 6:30 pm. The first of three comedians takes to the stage at 8 pm. A great time is had by all!

Summer 2018 Figure Skating Boot Camp

"Get Your Edge Back" at Figure Skating Boot Camp. Available to all intermediate and senior skaters. This preseason figure skating camp is being offered at the NKCC. The camp offers both on and off-ice conditioning classes that will get you ready for the upcoming figure skating season. The cost for all four full sessions is $75.00, which includes 5 hours of on-ice and 3 hours of off-ice instruction.

Swimming

The Peterborough Public Health website has lots of valuable information pertaining to swimming and public beaches, including current test results.

Both the Red Cross and the Lifesaving Society Swim Programs will be offered again this year at Chandos, Quarry Bay Beach and on Jack Lake (between Forest Glen Marina and Anchorage Marina) .

Red Cross Swim lessons are 30 minutes in length. Lifesaving Society Bronze Program lessons are 45 to 60 minutes in length.

Please note: The times listed below are approximate, and subject to change, dependent upon enrollment. All sessions run every weekday, Monday through Friday, inclusive. Exceptions are the first Monday of each session (last-minute enrollment day), holidays (Civic Holiday) and for weather-related issues such as thunderstorms when lightning is present. 


Chandos Beach

First session: July 10th to July 27th. Lesson times scheduled in the afternoon (Approximately between 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm).

Tennis

The double tennis courts at the Wilson Park Community Centre (66 Northey's Bay Road, Woodview, ON K0L 3E0) are active from May through October. The courts can accommodate pickleball as well as traditional tennis. The pickleball lines are yellow, in order to differentiate them from the white tennis lines. Additionally, there is the Wilson Park Ladies Tennis Club, for those interested in joining up with like-minded players.    


Tennis and Pickleball Membership Fees:

1. Seasonal Single $50.00 (Each single membership is permitted one guest).

2. Seasonal Family $100.00 (A family consists of immediate family, only. Verification may be requested at courts. Each family member is permitted a guest. A family membership may be issued 2 keys). 

3. Daily Rental $10.00 (plus a $40.00 refundable deposit for key). Key must be returned within 48 hours to obtain the refund.

4. Add $10 to options 1 or 2 above, and become a member of The Wilson Park Ladies Tennis Club. Each club member must purchase a seasonal membership, before joining the club.

If court key is lost, there will be a $20.00 Replacement Fee. 


Reserved Court Times:

Wednesday mornings (9 am-12 pm) are reserved for The Wilson Park Ladies Tennis Club.

Where to purchase your Club Membership

To enroll in The Wilson Park Ladies Tennis Club, there is a $10.00 fee. However, you must have first purchased a seasonal membership as listed above. Club memberships may be purchased only at the following location:

North Kawartha Community Centre (NKCC) - 340 McFadden Road, Apsley, ON K0L 1A0 - 705-656-4445 ext 251 or 252.


Wilson Park Ladies Tennis Club

To enroll in the Wilson Park Ladies Tennis Club, there is a $10.00 fee. However, you must have first purchased a seasonal membership as listed above. Benefits to joining the Tennis Club include: like-minded people to play with, reserved court time on Wednesday mornings from 9 am to 12 pm and access to a Tennis Pro when arranged by the Club. The Club arranges its own games and times on Wednesday mornings. Please note: The Club has a maximum membership of 10 players. Court Rules

  • Please do not adjust or tamper with court equipment. Report any deficiencies to the Parks and Recreation Department at 705-656-4445 ext 252. You may also email g.geraldi@northkawartha.on.ca.
  • Players must have a key to enter the court area.
  • Do not allow others to use your court key. Membership and/or privileges are non-transferrable and may result in the forfeiture of your Membership.
  • Players must have a Club membership card to play with the Wilson Park Ladies Tennis Club. 
  • If there are players waiting, please restrict your play to 45 minutes.
  • Do not enter a court when others are using it.
  • Do not walk behind players to cross a court when play is in progress; wait until rally or point stops.
  • Do not retrieve your ball if it goes into another court; rather ask for it to be returned when there is a pause in play on that court.
  • Only running shoes or tennis shoes may be worn on the courts.
  • No Foul language!
  • Bicycle riding, skate boarding and roller skating are not allowed on the courts.
  • In circumstances not covered above, common sense and consideration for others will rule.
