Halloween Fire Safety Tips
Halloween is all about fun, but safety comes first! Here are some tips from the North Kawartha Fire Department in partnership with the NFPA to help keep the night spooky, not risky.
Costume Safety:
- When choosing a costume try to avoid long, trailing fabrics that could catch fire.
- If your child wears a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough to clearly see out of.
- Consider adding reflective tape to costumes for better visibility in the dark.
- Teach children to Stop, Drop, and Roll in case their clothing catches fire. Practice at home
Fire Safety at Home:
- Use battery-operated candles or glow sticks in jack-o’-lanterns instead of real flames. If you must use a candle, supervise children at all times and use long matches or a utility lighter.
- Keep decorations like dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper away from flames or heat sources such as light bulbs or heaters.
- Make sure exits are always clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.
- Check that smoke alarms are working before the festivities begin.
Did you know?
Decorations are the first thing to ignite in more than 800 home fires each year, and nearly one-third of these fires started with a candle.
Trick-or-Treating Tips:
- Provide children with flashlights or glow sticks as part of their costume.
- Stick to well-lit areas and cross streets safely at intersections.
- Avoid shortcuts through yards or driveways and always inspect treats before eating.
- Remind kids to walk, not run, and to stay aware of their surroundings.
Have a fun and safe Halloween, North Kawartha!
